38 Years Of Remarkable Service – Mark Hutchinson

Celebrating 38 years of remarkable service!

Today we celebrate and say a massive thank you to Mark, who as our longest standing employee is retiring after an incredible 38 years with Constant Security Services.

Over nearly four decades, Mark has been a valued colleague, mentor and cornerstone to all the assignments he’s stepped foot on.

We couldn’t let Mark retire without asking him to share a few stories and insights into his incredible career. So, here’s a glimpse into his 38 years with Constant;

What did you do prior to joining Constant? What Made you chose a role in Security?
“After a medical discharge from the Navy, I applied for roles with the Fire, Prison and Fire services but unfortunately wasn’t able to pursue these further due to the discharge, however this is where I then landed on getting into Security. It was something I’d done before and liked the idea of getting back into.”

What was it about the business that attracted you to join Constant?
“I lived locally to Constant which is one of the reasons I chose them. By the end of my interview Mick L walked in, reviewed my documents and asked when I could start when I said I could start anytime, that was me in from there.”

What have you been your highlights from over the last 38 years? Do you have a favourite moment?
“Its hard to pick a favourite memory as so much has happened since I’ve been with Constant. For many years, I was deployed to assignments which had dog security provisions, so from the moment my interview ended, I picked up my companion Prince an Alsatian with a personality for security; loud and snappy but loyal and loved to work.

Another highlight was when I was deployed to an assignment which was hit with bad floods, that night myself and a couple of other colleagues were stranded on site for 36h, but despite the circumstances the camaraderie between us was amazing and we had a great laugh. That assignment in general I loved the people I worked with.”

What do you feel has been your greatest accomplishment with the business?
“The moments that stand out are when I won the Security officer of the year award BSIA National, or being one of the first to complete my NVQ Level 2 Security Qualification.

What have been your greatest challenges?
“I think my current assignment has been more of a challenging one, the main reason I say this is lots of the systems on site are older and the access control technology require manual use. Also site before my current which is a metal manufacturer, I found challenging especially in the beginning as it was a very busy site and often had a lot of unwanted activity which was an eye opener for definite.”

What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
“I’m looking forward to being able to do a lot more fishing, reading, taking trips away with my wife and generally having a bit more time to myself at home.”

Would you recommend security & Constant to others?
“I would definitely recommend security and Constant to others. I’ve always thought of Constant as the best, if it wasn’t I wouldn’t have stuck around, they are spot on.”

What advice would you give to aspiring security officers or officers just starting out?
“I have three; 1. Don’t be afraid to talk to people. 2. Always log everything, its your audit trail and greatest tool in this job. 3. Always make the job your own, I think that one is most important”

We can truly attest that Mark has made every single role he’s done at Constant his own and we wish him a happy and well-deserved retirement.
